The challenges we address.
When people end up in teams and don’t gel
When teams fall into frustration and paralysis
When technical experts are promoted into managerial and leadership roles
When complex messages need to be communicated
When leaders get tongue-tied
When people want to grow.
How we go about it.
Through skilful coaching and active workshop-style learning, Jonto helps people develop the abilities to mobilise themselves and others in complexity and lead with integrity, respect, humour, courage and responsibility. We aim to take people and organisations into ‘flow’, increasing their understandings of leadership, self and impact. Connection to values and purpose are key to Jonto’s ‘transmogrifying’* approach.
Jonto maintains a small number of highly valued clients, with whom it has strong trust relationships and true partnership. Our purpose is to offer individuals and teams time, space, care and expertise for growth, for the betterment of their organizations, loved ones and themselves.
* Transmogrify

The experience we have.
Jonto comprises James Freemantle and a coalition of first class practitioners in leadership, media, counselling, Organisational Psychology and assessment, theatre, teaching and filmmaking, drawn upon regularly and purposefully, subject to the context of the client.
James established REDgum Communications in 2008, merging with leadership development consultancy People Measures in 2018 where he was a partner until the launch of Jonto in 2022. Attending ‘Art and Practice of Leadership Development’ at the Harvard Kennedy School stretched his thinking and offered frameworks to navigate complexity and develop leadership. This enabled him to build on his foundations in media and teaching.
Jonto’s goal is always to create an environment of trust, where people feel safe and supported enough to experiment and take the risks required to enhance their growth and increase the effectiveness of their organisations.
James has co-designed and/or delivered leadership development programs for many organisations including Smart Parking (UK, Germany, NZ, Australia), the Australian Tax Office, Dulux Group, Kraft-Heinz, Australian Public Service Commission, Australian Super, Nab, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (Victoria), Dairy Australia and the Marcus Oldham Rural Leadership Program. He has senior experience across government, private (technology, agriculture, healthcare, aviation, media & advertising, professional services, sports and financial services) and not-for-profit sectors and regularly coaches C-suite and APS SES executives.
An English, History and Education graduate, occasional farmer and furniture maker, James spent several years as a producer, director, actor and presenter on Australian TV, and moved to Moscow as a newsreader for contentious international News channel RT. He has written and directed six films including Bush to Belly - 7 Indigenous kids, an Italian coffee machine and 500 bike riders in the Kimberley – screened on ABC International and NITV, and Lemon, which is currently screening in short film festivals.
